iPhone Developers: Useful resources to design UIs

Today we are going to write about some helpful resources for all the iPhone developers out there :)

iPhone Human Interface Guidelines: this is what Apple will use to refuse (among other things) your application so it's a MUST to read it at least once :) Just in case you are in a hurry you can find a quick overview of the document here.

iPhone GUI PSD: this is a PSD file containing all the standard elements, if you use Photoshop this will help you to make mockups and designs faster and with a 'pro' look.

OmniGraffle: fast and easy program which can add a professional look to your iPhone designs. You can make flow diagrams, web page designs, mockups and all kind of design stuff thanks to a powerfull interface customizable through different addons or packages called stencils. The package you should definitely get for iPhone designing is the Ultimate iPhone Stencil.

iUi - iPhone web apps made easy: it's a framework consisting of a JavaScript library, CSS, and images for developing iPhone webapps. An usefull resource if you are going to develope a web-based app.

Making of Things for iPhone: the different approachs taken by the team and the final decisions made. You may want to check out Things iPhone first, or the Desktop version to see the differences.

Learn from other apps mistakes: Smashing Magazine did an excelent job and gave us some advice using common errors. The best advice from here is, keep it simple and don't confusse users with non-standard visuals.

And in case you are more into the old-school trend the iPhone Stencil kit will do the trick for you, but if you are going to share your designs with someone... try not to do it this way, it's pretty 'ugly' :)

A few weeks ago there was a quick poll among developers about how to start an iPhone User Interface Design. You can read the results at: http://deanonsoftware.com/?p=73.

The funny point is that nearly 2/3 of developers use just paper and pencil.
