Last april we Apple had the 1 billion download countdown... an incredible number for an online store not even a year old. Now, it has been the AppStore's birthday and there was no countdown event, just a press realease showing a new number: 1.5 billion downloads.
In less than 4 months the AppStore got 0.5 billion downloads, was that absolutely unexpected??? With the release of the iPhone 3GS the size of the installed base and the variety of apps in the store may have come in to play:
- About 40 million iPhones and iPod touches
- Around 60.000 apps in 21 categories
- Above 18.000 games and entertainment
- Above 7.000 book apps
- Around 1.000 apps in every category
These numbers are a huge success for Apple and for a one year old online store... but at this growing rate, where's the top??? We will see, but what everyone is starting to realize is that
the App Store will need a change soon.
